Early parliamentary elections were held in Azerbaijan on February 9, 2020, following the decree signed by the President of the Azerbaijan Republic, Ilham Aliyev, on December 5, 2019. The voting took place in 5,573 polling stations, many of them were equipped with webcams that ruled out any irregularities.
1,314 candidates competed for 125 seats in the Parliament, which is called Milli Majlis ("national assembly" - Azerb.).
According to Arthur Gerasimov, special coordinator of the OSCE short-term observation mission, the parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan were being monitored by 358 observers from 41 countries. Most of the observers admitted that the elections proceeded in a transparent, free and democratic manner.
The decision to hold early parliamentary elections was aimed to foster the ongoing domestic reforms.
The final results will be announced by the Central Election Committee in the beginning of the week.
